A Wales–Japan Life Story Comic
Here and Now / Yma Nawr / 今、ここに立つ is a life story comic featuring four stories co-created with people living with dementia and their families in Wales and Japan.
The comic is a flip-book with two covers. One side reads left to right, in the Western way. Turn it over and the other side reads right to left, as manga does. Two covers, two countries, two reading directions.
Read side by side, the four stories invite readers in Wales and Japan to learn from each other's experience of dementia, and from each other's approach to care.
Created through an international collaboration between Re-Live in Wales and the Tenjin-kai Social Welfare Foundation in Ofunato, Japan.
The project is supported by: Wales Arts International, British Council Wales, Arts Council of Wales.

Former rugby player Patrick lives with vascular dementia in Wales. Pushing Forward follows his diagnosis and his determination not to let dementia define him - with humour, stubbornness, family, friends, a Sunday lunch and a turn on the dance floor.

Ritsuko-san shares life alongside her husband as his dementia progressed - and one remarkable day when his carers at Tenjin-kai supported him to revisit his home and his old high school, where he sang part of his school song and ate his favourite seafood meal.
A story about what becomes possible when families and carers work together.

Dr Uchide has spent her career as one of the world's leading voices in dementia care. Then her own mother, Fumiko-san, began living with dementia.
A story about the insights that come from being a daughter rather than a specialist, and about what a person living with dementia is still able to give.

ほっとした / Relieved
by Ebisu Yoshikazu
The painting on the cover of the Japanese side of Here and Now is Relieved, by the alternative manga artist Ebisu Yoshikazu.
His work helped define Garo, the legendary manga anthology, through the 1970s and 80s. He is also a much-loved Japanese television personality.
Ebisu-sensei is now living with dementia. He created Relieved in 2023 for The Last Exhibition of Yoshikazu Ebisu.
It is a profound honour to feature this painting. The work stands as a quiet but powerful testament to the fact that people living with dementia continue to express themselves and share their inner worlds through art.
